Some heroes wear helmets.
Some wear uniforms.
And some quietly walk through ashes with four paws and a powerful nose.
For five years, a Labrador named ROTC served alongside fire investigators in Colorado, helping uncover the truth behind devastating fires. His job wasn’t about fame or recognition. It was about protecting communities and helping justice find its way through the smoke.
Now, after an extraordinary career assisting in over 180 fire investigations, ROTC is finally retiring.
But his legacy will continue — through the lives he helped protect and through the next brave K9 stepping into his role.
A Different Kind of Firefighter
When firefighters extinguish the flames of a burning building, the work doesn’t always end there.
In many cases, investigators must determine how the fire started.
Was it an accident?
Or something more dangerous, like arson?
That’s where dogs like ROTC come in.
Fire investigation dogs are trained to detect traces of accelerants — substances such as gasoline or lighter fluid used to start fires intentionally.
Their noses are incredibly powerful.
Even after intense flames destroy buildings, these dogs can detect tiny chemical clues hidden deep within the debris.
ROTC became one of these specialized heroes.
A Nose That Helped Find the Truth
From his first day on the job, ROTC showed remarkable focus and determination.
He worked alongside fire investigators across Colorado, entering burned structures long after the smoke cleared.
Each scene was different.
Collapsed buildings.
Charred vehicles.
Burned homes filled with debris.
But ROTC approached every investigation with the same dedication.
Over the course of his career, he assisted in 180 separate fire investigations.
In many of those cases, his incredible sense of smell helped investigators identify crucial evidence that might otherwise have been missed.
That evidence helped determine causes, support legal investigations, and prevent future fires.
Quiet Service, Powerful Impact
Unlike human firefighters, ROTC never spoke about his achievements.
He didn’t seek praise.
His work happened quietly.
Walking beside investigators.
Searching through rubble.
Helping uncover the truth hidden beneath layers of ash.
But the impact of his work helped protect countless people and communities.
Because when the cause of a fire is discovered, it can prevent future tragedies from happening again.
A Well-Deserved Retirement
After five years of dedicated service, ROTC is finally stepping away from the job.
His retirement was honored by his team and the state of Colorado — a recognition of the important role he played in fire investigations.
But while one hero rests, another begins.
A young Labrador named Waffle is now stepping into ROTC’s role.
Waffle will continue the mission — using his powerful nose to help investigators uncover the truth behind fires.
It’s a passing of the torch between two remarkable working dogs.
Why Detection Dogs Matter
Dogs like ROTC demonstrate just how valuable working animals can be in protecting communities.
Fire investigation dogs help investigators:
• Detect accelerants used in arson
• Identify evidence in fire scenes
• Support criminal investigations
• Prevent future fire-related tragedies
Their ability to locate microscopic traces of chemicals makes them an irreplaceable part of modern fire investigation teams.
And their loyalty and dedication make them true heroes.
Heroes With Wagging Tails
ROTC’s story reminds us that heroes don’t always look the way we expect.
Sometimes they don’t wear uniforms.
Sometimes they don’t speak.
Sometimes they simply walk quietly beside the people working to protect others.
With a wagging tail and a powerful nose.
Thank you, ROTC, for your service.
And welcome, Waffle.
May your journey continue the legacy of courage, dedication, and kindness.
